Cod rod to match 113H - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

I'm looking for a codfish rod to match a Penn Senator 113H (4/0) loaded with 30# mono and topped with 50# PowerPro. To be used for bait and jigging.
I've heard of the Penn Slammer series as good matches....and Ugly Stiks as well. Anyone know what line # range and lure wt. I should be looking for?

Depends what species you're going to be targeting. The Slammer is a decent short money rod to throw a 113 on for Cod jigging. I happened to be in Bennies last year and got one rated for 20-50 lb line for $39.95. I figured for that much, you really can't go wrong. It's a pretty stiff rod so I only use it for Cod jigging where I really don't care about the action so much. For other types of fish, I'd want something a lot nicer.

I want a rod that I will take on party boats (helen H, frances fleet, etc.) for offshore wreck/cod trips, and will be targeting specifically cod and the occasional haddock that bites on - but specifically cod. I already have a lighter deep-sea seabass outfit that will come along. Just something for cod, jigging and bait.
I only have about $200 to spend between the reel, rod and line so I think I'll get the Penn Slammer.

As for the line ratings, 20-50# is enough on the slammer? The 113H will be spooled with 30# mono backing and 300yds of 50# powerpro, this sound ok? do you by any chance have the model for this rod?

ugly stick makes a rod 8 ft that lots of guys use i dont remember the line class. i have 1. its a little light in the tip i thought for jigging so i did what alot of guys did and cut it down 2 guides from the tip. its alot better for jigging that way. i did catch alot of fish when it was longer and lighter, but its just easier to jig when it was shortened. im throwin from 16-24oz on it with 113 h 50 dacron. im a party boat guy, some party boats dont allow the use of superbraids just to let you know.

The Ugly Stik I cannot find in the same online store as the 113H, and tackledirect sells the 113H for $90 and the Penn Slammer rod for $60 so I think i'm going with that.
Now I have to order from the "Terminal Tackle Co." and get line, PowerPro, teasers, beads, leader material, 100 pak hooks, teasers etc. for tying cod rigs.

Are the 3" B2 Squids too small for cod teasers? I can get them cheap in 100 pack....heard they were among the best teasers for cod out there.....any other good ones?

Better yet goto your local bait shop if they are still open or just goto wally world and find PowerPro, teasers, beads, leader material ect. a hell of alot cheaper than ordering all that online.

actually its a catalog, it has pretty decent prices. My local tackle shop doesn't even sell the teasers, beads, bulk hooks any of that rig stuff.

Go with the slammer... great rods for the coin.. have a few 20-40 and 20-50 for deep water blackfishing... and they kick ass. aint a 'chin alive you cant muscle with that rod... the slow action also gives a much better fight that one would think....

i use penn 309's for coding i have 25lb for backing and 50lb power pro on it. it works fine but on the 113h it has alot more line capt than my 309's i think that line setup will be fine.

Oh by the way - the Penn Slammer rod that is rated for 20-50# line sounds right but is only rated for 1-6oz. lure - how will it be able to jig a cod jig that is like 12-16oz..??

Inshore... I lift any tog under 5 pounds over the rail with it.. never had a problem.. its a stiff enough rod.. should be fine...

Don't worry, when the penn slammer snaps (usually about a foot from the tip) you will have a nice stout cod rod. I have 2 modified slammers. Go with the ugly stick, 20-50 or 30-60. Also if you are going to be fishing shallow, 30-60 ft I would get a much lighter set up. I like the penn 965 with an Ug stick 12-25. It handles 6-9 oz jigs just fine. Remember you are not casting these jigs in most situations.

I have the same reel with the 7' heavy action slammer, it works fine for me in the deeper waters but its a fairly heavy outfit.

I also have an Ugly Stuk, I think the one Van mentioned. Not sure. That's a good Cod stick too. I like the 50#Cortland Spectron on the Cod reels. Most party boats don't like braid because your jig won't drift the same as everyone they gave mono setups to and the mates will spend too much time untangling everyone. I'm not much of a party boat person myself. Charters are one thing but party boats?

I guess it wouldn't be so bad if it was all one group of people that knew each other.

Just too many people for my liking.

I think that is the same rod, I use 50# Cortland Braid its just the regular braid not the super line stuff much cheaper but has a larger diameter. The Spectron is thinner and can be a problem if your not used to it. Many of the party boats do not like their fares to use superbraids but don't mind the regular stuff. Mono seems to work OK in shallow water (less than 100 feet) or bait fishing but I don't like useing it. I do use a shock leader of about three feet some guys will use much longer.

My newest favorite party boat Cod rod is the Ugly stik BWB 1120 8'0" ..I picked it up from Ron at the Sportsmans Den and had him cut it down to the second guide and install a roller tip. Tried braid but after the first tangle from hell I switched to 80# Yo-zuri Hybrid. I switched reels from the Penn 113H to the regular 113 cause the 113 H hit my left forearm all day. The Ugly stick is inexpensive and will handle jigs over 30 oz easily

Just my 2¢...
I have the 113h and i spooled it with saltwater fusion 80# test.. 25#dia before that i was using tuffline xp and all i can say is that if you get tangled with mono on a charter your going to piss off the other people you tangled cause if your tangle is nasty everyone is out of fishing for atleast 15 min's unless a mate gets to the tangle first and he starts cutting.... not kewl if your down some 150+ feet... the fusion line has a coating that makes untangling a little easier and it has 0 stretch.. i've landed cod, stripers, and other monster fish well over 40#'s with no problems and it's much less expensive then powerpro/tuffline..

I had this rod made over at CMS just so it's stiff enought to jig upto 30oz and sensitive so i can feel scup/seabass tag the bait..
i think i spent at the time when they were at the darthmouth location about 140 or so on the rod... if you search hard enought you could get a 113h for around 80 or so bucks new and about 40-50 used.. and enough line for about 20 bucks or so... i went custom cause with the tuffline at first i snapped the tip on 2 slammers from kmart...(of course i got my money back)..

if you want a good rod check out the tsunami line but TEST your rod before you buy... they are production rods with in my opion NO quality control.. check for loose eye's and loose reel seats.. i have the king fish rod with a calcutta 700s i use for bass and hands down it's the best freaking rod i bought for under 50 bucks.. it's strong enough to tango with the Big Bass from Block Island all day long..

you get what you pay for but sometimes you get very lucky...

Go eletric young man!! Nothing like it!! 100, 200 even 300 feet of water is a joke when you don't have to reel!!

I use 80# tuff line and can anchor the boat with it

Comes in handy when them Blue Sharks are steeling my cod, and I bring them in instead. I have that on a 9/0 penn sentor with all roller guides
