Having fished RI Beaches at night for bass with eels I have had few possible shark encounters - I have had a shark hit a bass on the line but that is it really all I can confirm

Jimmy Sly or his partner got one on the RISS on an eel some years ago, I am sure there are some browns and sand tigers around this time of year...

Ohhh, I bet they are out there, just unsure how many...

Keep in mind that it is technically illegal to target certain species of shark. If you are "targeting a legal species" but just so happen to catch a prohibited species, you must release it as quickly as possible without inflicting any unnecessary harm. I've never been a fan of this technicality as I liken it to targeting bluefish in the EEZ with eels but just so happening to catch and release striped bass.

These days you could always try the holiday roast on a hook and chain off the dock approach.
I have targeted sharks a little on the west coast. Once you catch a
couple it is sort of boring. Finding a spot they tend to frequent can
be the hardest part and once you get it dialed in, it is not so much if
you will catch one, but how big and how many.
Sharks are cool to catch and see up close but you often have to fight
them to exhaustion and I frankly dont like doing that with any fish.
Most sharks are pretty resilient, but I still prefer not to target
them. My surfcasting buddies out there would have sharking
nights...I would show up for the social part of it and leave the rod in
the car...just drink tequila on the beach and enjoy the
spectacle.....hahahaa...poor sharkie was just looking for a snack and
somehow ended up on the beach.

I don't generally like the technicality either but is saved our butt during the bass moratorium in the 80s

No - what I'm saying is that under the technicality of "moratorium" you couldn't be targeting striped bass because they were illegal to possess. But if you say you're fishing for bluefish and not targeting striped bass you can get away with catching striped bass by accident.

The only consistent shark fishing in the RI surf I can remember happened around 20 years back right at the beach down the steps at SE light on Block. A friend of mine was catching some large brown sharks. He was originally fishing for bass that summer and kept getting spooled on his Ambassador 7000. He finally landed a shark. Then changed his rigging to more efficiently target sharks and his landing ratio improved. He chummed heavily with pogy/mackeral.
