Wire Leader?
Hi everyone. I am relatively new to surf casting for stripers and have been out in Hull, Boston, and the Canal.
One question I have with the arrival of bluefish all over the place, should I now be using wire leaders when I fish? I have read about people getting bitten off by the blues, and I would like to avoid that fate. Is wire the way to go, or is a heavier mono preferable?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome - If you're fishing with bait and targeting bluefish that are "all over the place" I would say yes, use a wire leader. If you're plugging you are pretty safe by using heavy mono leader.

I dunno Dennis....if they're "all over the place"...blitz like conditions or even schooled up to some extent, and he's targeting them or rather not trying to avoid them...I'd suggest a leader. Those ferocious yellow-eyed demons are relentless when in pursuit. I'm sure you've caught more than one on one lure at least once in your lifetime. Even with heavier mono, chaffing will occur and we all know what happens next if you're not checking/replacing your leader.
If they're in thick, I'm switching over to steel, but then again I don't mind catching bluefish.
I think booker means in general...based on what's he's been reading or hearing. In that case, I'd say stick to mono/flouro until further notified by Mr. Bloofish ...you'll know when to switch over to steel. Not worth worrying about that at home behind a computer...base your decision on that particular situation.

Its sort of picking poison. Wire over heavy mono. I have seen blues strike swivels..knots..and even the small wake the braid makes cutting through the water when you have a fish on.
In those cases...wire does not help...and its further lost expense.
I lean to heavy mono leader and stick to cheap lures. Old bucktails and west coast surface irons. The baracuda irons have a singe hook. I have caught bass on them too. They are 10 bucks and blue proof as they are metal.
Like any blitz fishing. Fish the edges...this can help reduce breakoffs and doubles. With a single hook lure...you get no doubles.

And crushed barb.
I used to speed jig bluefish in the bay with single hooked diamonds. a little slack boatside and they would thrash off the hook. All the fun with all my fingers....
