bermuda report
went down for a long weekend and was able to sneak in some fishing. tried to book a charter for bonefish but jump dem bones was all booked up. ended up finding a shore guide who does hand line fishing and it sounded interesting so I spent the morning with him and got to see how the locals do it. after a night of drinking most of the rum on the island we met up at his honey hole at a gentlemanly 8 am. we walked and crawled through some mangroves for a few minutes and arrived at a tiny harbor loaded with bait. one throw of a castnet and we were loaded up with chum and bait for the day. small silversides and peanut bunker sized pilchards.

next we crawled out of the mangroves and headed over some old lava fields to a spot where l there was a 15' deep channel running through the lava rock to a bigger lagoon. we started chumming and working our way up the food chain. we got some bream(sp), a lot like a scup, and he rigged it up with a couple of hooks and tossed it out as far as he could in hopes for a "rockfish" aka grouper. I started working the channel and got a 3' moray eel, some ballyhoo, pinfish and a small rockfish. then the albies showed up and started crashing the slick. You think albies are frustrating with a fishing rod then you should try a hand line - so no love from them. then there were some bigger shadows that showed up deep and I instantly hooked up on a decent "gray dog" - mutton snapper. put up a pretty good fight and made my day.
