As sad as it is, these needless drownings continue to occur. Earlier this year the town of Narragansett installed barracades along the Avenues. Yet around the same time I witnessed a couple with a kid about 12 near Black Pt. standing out on a rock awash with waves. One wave a little bigger than the norm could have resulted in a tragedy. In fact, I was prepared to call 911.
Around the same time I saw a subsistance fisherman rockhop his was to the top of Quahog Rock in the same area. A huge wave washed over the top of the rock soaking him before he hustled his way back to safety.
During the past weekend I saw fishermen tossing crab-baited rigs with 2 or 3 ounce sinkers into a surf with waves 12 feet high. Chances of catching a tautog seemed pretty slim to me.
