Frances Tog!
Trips are heating up now. Hope to see some of you guys out there next Saturday.
Limited out (10 fish) on tog today from barely keepers to my biggest, 21"....first time toggin. Fried some tonight, mmmm. More in freezer. Excellent trip from the Gail Frances.
My pix are developing, ill post them when there done. 
Anyone planning on a frances tog trip Saturday?  |

i want a rod made for toggin, double as shore and party boat, to fit my 975 w/ 65# PowerPro. the one I have keeps losing inserts and is getting on my nerves, now I want to change this 975 combo JUST for togs, since I love how the reel performed.
Any Ideas? in the $70-80 range? cant get a custom tog rod for this $, right? |

Congrats on your first good blackfish.. Went out of Newport today (on a private boat) and had a decent day, not sure how many fish we had, kept about 12, released at least double that, sized 14"- about 9lbs or so, some nice fish but no monsters this trip... Keep at it..
A thought on your question.. the Penn Slammer series makes GREAT tog rods.. I fish the 7' 20-50 (we mostly fish deep water) and will not and cannot fish anyother rod, as it is all I have used for years... and the prices is right around $50 or so...

Thanks!!! I'll look into the Slammer series.....though on a codfish rod thread I was told they suck and break all the time at the tip....are they better than the 20-50# Ugly Stik? And are they sensitive?? There is a nicely wrapped, 20-50# Ugly Stik Custom 7' Boat rod, its an ugly stik so its wicked strong and pretty sensitive....can't go wrong with this right?
BTW all these rods looked unmatched when hooked up to a Penn 975. People normally use 65# braid with these reels, so do they use heavier rods also in the 20-50# range, or is that too unmatched looking for a reel rated for 15# mono?

I have broken one slammer in my life, and it was 12+ years old and was rated lighter than I was using it (plus it had caught a few thousand Blackfish, it was tired) I think they are sensitive enough for blackfishing and have PLENTY of muscle to keep em out of the rocks... Also used these rods to take bass, blue, and even sharks.. great bang for the buck...
I like ugly sticks too, but for blackfish it is slammer or nada for me... but then again we are stuck in our ways and what do I know anyways
Go with what rod feels right...
About the reel, I use a 113H senator.. own a 965 for plus and fluke... but I guess the 975 would be fine

and where did you fish last time???
next to Block Island? or closer to Sakonnet Point?

hmm.. lemme think on that.. $50 for a tautog trip is a bit expensive for me at the moment.. they used to be in the 30$ range.. with a 10 fish limit.. thats only 5 suppers for me.. hehe...
depends if i can sell my baby senator and my calcutta..
