Help with Add On Boat Livewell

Curious, any other boaters have an "add-on" livewell? Either custom made from a barrel/container or something like a

I'm specifically interested in how the plumbing kit functions/is set up exactly? Is is best to constantly pump fresh water into livewell & have a discharge mechanism? Or is simply recirculating same water fine?

I use a 40g car wash barrel. I run a splitter valve off the raw water wash down and run fresh water constantly. And the overflow just dump over the side of the boat. The constant water flow keeps the baits happy

I use the one that came built in the boat .1st thing I did was push up the pump size & have never really had a problem .
I have a home made oval one in the yard that will hold 40 adult pogies , even in warm water …...sure don,t need that anymore

Mike - you still running the Sea Hunt right? I need to get my pump fixed and was wondering if I should go other route.

I run a 30 gallon off a combo wash down/livewell pump. Definitely want to have a constant supply of fresh water. I found the best was to come in the tank with a 90° fitting st the bottom that way the water is moving in a circular motion with an overflow at the top.

They are not meant to run for long durations

yep Mike , I can hold 20 , just about all day ..well this year with these temps it would probably we a week .
yep because the wash down & aerator pumps are separate that a great way …..I upgraded the pumping power of the pump & it shoots a lot a lot of water & creates surface bubbles in the tank ……………. I can,t remember if I replaced once or twice in all these years >><

Mosses you have an ultra like me I think you can replace the cartridge on the pump but I made one last year used a bilge pump over the side clipped to the batteries. Made a larger one this year your welcome to the old one just need the pump and hoses it fit on the back bench or near the ladder no problem

Not sure what kind of live-bait you're looking to keep, but constant fresh-water is NEEDED if your bait is bleeding for whatever reason...even a poorly sabiki'd mackerel will cloud your water up fast, as will a pogy. Once that happens, you don't have much time before they go belly up...sometimes I have to help the pump by dumping in a few buckets of fresh water just to help purge the blood out faster...and that's with the pump on....I let my scuppers worry about the over-flow.
If you're only netting your bait, constant fresh isn't required but it's a world of a difference if you can.

gilly , ya can save some work & worries , if your snagging ………..I put them in pails of water when 1st snagged ,let them blead & then drop them in the tank ><><

Get a bait century 1100 from West Marine. 3 year factory warrantee. you'll be changing it every two years anyways no matter what pump you buy.
Pump in from the bottom - overflow out the top. Barrel drains when you turn the switch off. Put an on/off plastic ball valve on the inlet, so you can shut the valve once full so it doesn't drain out. a couple macs will live for a while with no fresh water, but not many. whiting will live overnight, eels etc.

I run a Kodiak 30 gallon oval,it is supplied from a sureflow 1100 off a through hull, overflow dumps overboard. I like the baffle system on the kodiak, you also can put the overflow at the half way of
Point...

4 blade propeller pops the boat on plane quickly.

Yup. I put one in my Sea Hunt but used the original livewell. I could hold 20 pogies all day but they never lasted that long.
