fly making equipment
Hey guys I know their is a forum for this sort of thing but I wanted the broadest response possible in the quickest time. I am going to buy a fly drying rotary motor and I was wondering who uses what and how they you like the particular brand you have. Thanks in advance for any responses. We might not be able to fish right now but we sure as hell can buy many toys this time of year. |

i just used a rod drying motor and pushed a large cork(wine barrel size 2.5 - 4" taper) over the shaft it was 10 rpm brought it down to like 3 or so. It was good enough...

For many years I used a barbecue rotisserie motor. Now I use one of my rod drying motors.

Swimmer,
I made mine from a Mirror ball moter from U-Do It Electronics in Needham. It is a MBA-1A mirror ball moter, recommended to balls up to 20". It only costs about $10 bucks. All you need is some L brackets, scrap pieces of pine, a piece of foam ( try AC Moore), and some screws.

Nu-Wave Fly Turner
Not quite as cheap as homemade, but it's a very well built and thought out product. Perfect rotation speed, and a slipper cltuch which allows you to grab the wheel, stick another fly in, and then let it go with out jamming the motor. Also the spring surrounding the wheel never needs to be replaced unlike foam and cork.

Fly drying motor
I have used the home-made versions that several of you mentioned, but my main concern was with amount of flys I can dry at once and the integrity of the material I was using. In the past I used el cheapo foam thaqt didn't hold the hooks over extended periods or the foam just did not retain its curcular shape that long. So I figure since this is Santa's treat I would go whole hog. I thank everyone for their kind answer to my questioin and I wish everyone a peaceful and fullfilling Christmas.
