Home Remedies For A Nasty Cold?

I am in the throws of the nastiest cold I have had in some time.....stuffy head and ears, heavy chest w/ a rumble and cough, and a low grade fever! Anybody got any good home remedies for this? Taking Robitussin DM every 4 hours to break up the congestion in my chest but beyond that all I can do is let it run its course. Any home help would be awesome.

Nyquil so you can sleep. Screw the measured dose. Two big swigs usually does the trick.
Make sure you have Zinc in your diet.

Lemon tea with honey
Keeps you human for 10 minutes or so

LOTS of water

means LOTS of piss breaks but it helps with energy level and flushing

Feel for ya'

Have been laid out twice this winter

Vitamin C, blueberries, and ketchup all are detoxifiers and help filter out all the bad stuff in your system.

Hot Cider w/ a Shot (or Two) of Captain Morgan w/ a Nyquil Chaser. Extra Blankets on the Bed and go to sleep early. I usually do this for two days and feel 50% better.

By day I like Dayquill and anything with (as fresh as you can get or make it yourself) horseradish in it to clear those pipes. By night I go with a healthy dose of Nyquill, a gob of VIcks Vaporub in each nostril and a Breathright strip (menthol).
Just my own remedy, but when the cold's got ya with a dry scratch throat, I think nothing takes the pain away faster than and ice cold Flying Fish Pale Ale or two (or three) which also help dry you out later on. Be Well! 9 Days Til...

I agree with the Vit C and zinc. Also, a natural supplement is echinacea. I helps boost the immune system.

I 'm in the same boat

it was real crowded at the woostah fishin show .... and right afterwards i got hit hard. AINT the flu , but close enough. I read the other day that cold viruses are all different and none are the same so that you cannot build up antibodies to a general cold virus. That sucks. My chest hurts from coughing and i'm taking everything there is... even the hot stuff method and i'm a long ways away from feeling good. Usually though, i take some jumbo shrimp and boil them a bit then split the tail so they butterfly and i cook them on a flat griddle with butter, mongolian fire oil, (put the oven fan on high cuz its similar to tear gas) and also sprinkle on some black pepper too for some super hot shrimp. Garlic is a natural antibiotic ,so make some garlic bread to go with it. Alcohol always seems to help and my favorite cold rememdy drink is an alexander brandy with a light sprinkle of nutmeg on top.

				oh i forgot

CVS brand 500 milligram vitamin C with ACEROLA is awesome and tastes like sweet tarts from the old days and nine of -em will fit into a film cannister for cold weather fishin... but the secret is to eat an orange too, especially the white stuff in the center of the orange
which is bioflavanoids which makes vitamin C work better.

Um, exactly.......and that's why you should steer clear of the Alka Seltzer Plus, Nyquil, Robitussin, etc. All those "remedies" do is suppress the symptoms.

When you get a cold virus, you get all those symptoms because it is your body's natural way to rid itself of the virus. If you take the "medicines" to suppress those symtoms, yeah, they may make you feel better for a bit, but all they are really doing is working AGAINST your body's natural reaction, and thus the cold hangs on for days.

So, stay away from the cold medicines.....take some aspirin if you need to, and the Vitamin C, the zinc, and Vitamin E.....all of them help boost your body's immune defenses (you should take them everyday, anyways!). Also, drink a lot of water, until you start to float, and then drink a lot more.....and expect to piss a lot......it flushes your body.

Before you go to bed, make some tea with lemon and honey, and add a real good shot of your favorite alcoholic beverage (Brandy, whisky, scotch, vodka). Then, thickly slather your chest and throat with the Vicks Vap-o-rub, and put on a t-shirt and then a sweatshirt or two on top of that.

Get under the covers, and sweat like a pig for 6 hours. When you quit sweating, change your clothes and go back to bed.

The hot stuff (cayenne, etc.) also works to clear you a bit, and makes life bearable. And garlic, garlic, garlic.......but if you eat as much garlic as I do on a daily basis, you wouldn't have gotten the cold in the first place..... .

Also, avoid dairy products during the cold. Milk and such tends to thicken/coagulate the mucus, and then it doesn't expel as easily (remember, expelled mucus is the body ridding itself of the virus)

I haven't had a cold in over 3 years (knock on wood), and the last one I had lasted a day and a half by doing what I said above.

Good luck....

I used to go out with this Polish girl who would try and cover my chest with cabbage before I went to bed. Not sure if it worked cause I never let it happen.
