You hook the jig/fly whatever on the nail.. when it spashes down it falls off... increases the casting distance... have some poppers rigged this way for windy days...
of course i didnt make em so who knows?

All depend on what the morning brings for my first cast, could be live lining a herring or if I am running out and see fish breaking a nice popper or pencil to the "outside" of the school. See I was watching video at the TFCTFN

This year brings the return of the blue topped silver bottomed big a$$ popper. Had a keeper jump 2' out of the water and get hooked last year on the first day. I'm not one to mess with a good thing.

Jimbo, The egg is basically to fish a fly with spinning tackle. It gives it weight to cast. Since a lot of bass areas are rocky, you can also use it to fish small jigs to keep them off the bottom.
Its sort of like using a teaser without the plug.
You'd be suprised how large a bass would grab a 4 inch fly.

I'd throw a jig or a weighted plastic just to keep 'em honest--never know if there's something bigger than 30" laying underneath the little guys up top

I'd also try to throw it around the edges of the school and not towards the middle.

is it just me that sees the lack of common sense in targeting the early season schoolies? nothing like damaging the future stock!

I start the season with a load of macks for the freezerand chum buckets.
Then it is off to some live herrin early am on my way to the fluke grounds.
This will go on till the bass move from the vinyard sound and i will be Fluking most everyday in june.
Then as july comes around i will be getting sick of Fluke eberyday and will start some live scup and wire jigging.
This will go one till the aug Blues set in were i will slow down a little.
Spet, will be a hole host of things, Fluke Bass Scup Beach fishing Cod, thur Oct. and after Hollween the boat will go to bed for another winter.

Thats it. Nothing special

RIJIMMY, This post definitely has me intrigued. I've used cork to keep live or chunked bait off the bottom, but not like a slip sinker like you describe. Can you post a picture of a typical fly you'd use, or describe the pattern or bait you'd be matching?

Newell guy, I used gami octopus hooks for chunking and they work better than eagle claw circle hooks. But now some people claim that daiachi red demon circle hooks produce basses. I tried it, but don't see the difference. What do you think?

Yup, I am staying that way. Sometimes I use smaller gami octopus for chunking if I don't see any big bass around.

I use whatever paint I have, usually external housepaint or primer, gray or white.

By the end of April we will be seeing some fish in the 20 to 30 inch range and will be catching them on small jigs. Usually a white bucktail with a small white curltail for me.

Just a suggestion: You might want to grind off the heads of those nails sticking out of the eggs so that the eye of the jig or fly doesn't get hung up.

I've read that sometimes fish will hit the egg, so I plan to attach a hook to the rear eye of the egg-- or maybe I'll just use a popper as the egg and put a nail in it to hang the jig/fly on, that way you've got the surface and sub surface covered, or maybe the commotion from the popper would attract them to the sub surface morsel----- doubles would be exciting.
