Big part of the problem - the energy concerns had a hand in drafting energy policy.
There's your real cost of fishing: the per trip costs. Eels & gas are where most of the money for the hobby goes....

I bought a Honda Element last year, it gets a little over twenty no good for sand though...but I don't fish sand. Most of my spots are under 3 gallons, round trip. I don't care for boat too much - I'd rather stay home and watch TV than fish off a boat.
If I did not guide I would have gotten an gas/electric Prius and put a big rod rack on it.
