I use my COX@HOME very much as well. Just for my regular job, I spend a lot of my time over my VPN to check servers, security, job kick-offs, and various remote access products. Going back to the near dark ages would be difficult for more than a couple weeks. Other high speed options are out too. I don't think I would touch fixed wireless yet even if it were available (which I doubt) and xDSL is too unreliable through Verizon (I'm told) and they're practically the only game in town. Plus the distance bit, I'm not much over 2 miles along the Telco poles to the CO but Verizon's line tests run an absurd 22K feet - out of DSL range...
When I started this site 18 months ago, it was all run on a 384 SDSL out of my living room in Braintree, Ma. I was only 12K from the CO but it wasn't cheap, the cost has gone up a lot since then too....
