Don Musso (Superstrike) used to make big wooden needles---some even bigger than that.

Most plugs look like someone else's. I mean, how many ways can you make one needlefish look different from another? Mostly, they're meant to fool bigger fish into thinking they're a smaller fish, and thus they all have to look somewhat like a fish You can trademark the name (Danny, Atom 40, etc) but it's almost impossible to get a patent.
