before the phone call was made. i actually went up to them and took 1 herring out of there net, to liveline. "thanks buddy" i said. "no problem man".
we called the cops twice. took em about a half hour to show up, but these knuckleheads were in no rush. they were havin a grand ole time.
punnishment was a citation. probably 100 bucks. and they lost there gear.
got 62 of them all brined up and ready for the freezer. and thats only half of what these schmucks had in one bucket..
"thanks again, buddy"

I believe $100 is the maximum allowable fine in many cases, assuming this is a Massachusetts herring run. I know that's the biggest ticket I can write a herring poacher at my run. I'm just a Fish Warden though, not an EPO.
I do have very thorough confiscation powers. If it's fishing related, I can confiscate it.
Of course, the herring run is so weak this year I haven't seen anyone get near their limit.

Can a fish warden deputize others?
Is there a way to legitimize a volunteer crew so that they would have the power to enforce anti-poaching laws?
I see enough poaching in freshwater ponds to make me wonder what else can be done by the legal fishermen without breaking any laws ourselves?

HEREIN lies the problem. A hundred bucks is laughable. Just like the boys who got nabbed in RI for selling bass for years out of season...the 10K fine was a "cost of doing business", no problem. 100 bucks? I pay more then that for bait. This "crime" is looked upon as a non-event. These guys need to feel some pain.
How about a MIN of $10,000. and a Max of $100,000. I think this is fair. The money goes for more law inforcement and improvement of the run itself. Poaching and stealing and trashing public (and private) fisheries has got to stop. Put some teeth into the law and let it bite a few dirtbags in the ass.

I can do better then that. As a fellow law abiding fisherman, I hearby grant you a carry permit and to shoot on sight any poachers...those approaching a run with cast nets...please fire one and only one warning shot, then shoot to kill if they approach. Keep their equipment for your personal needs.
Anyone without a permit: $10,000 fine
Anyone exceeding quota: $10,000 fine
Anyone tampering with run: $ 100,000. fine
gogetem!

DEM came to the run that I go to last night. When they got there I had just got my first one. They were checking everyone there so I came in to show them my lic and 1 fish. They did get one guy for being 4 over, $100 fine and has to go to court. I got my limit and came in, I set my tote down next to there truck and waited for them to finish, well we took a count and I had 25. OOOOOHHHHH S%$#
Put one back he said, I got out my ID and lic to get my fine and he said he did not think I was dumb enough to try to take a extra and wait for them while they were there. Have a nice night. The best part about it was when I got home one of my fish was a perch, LOL

How about $100.00 per fish?
With a minimum fine of $500 - $1000. for first offense
Double the fines for each additional offense.
1st $100.00 / fish with $500 minimum
2nd $200.00 / fish with $1000 min
3rd $400.00 / fish with $2000 min
etc
AND CONFISCATE ALL THE GEAR, INCLUDING VEHICLE, SINCE IT WILL BE USED IN TRANSPORTING THE POACHED FISH.

If someone could invent "faux herring" then none of this herring poaching would go on in such large numbers.

In CT, the fine is $154 per fish. We also have a total closure - no taking of herring.
