Question tapered leader

how important is a tapered leader? i was out casting and i just tied a piece of 20 pound test to the fly line and it would not cast very well. it was doing fine when i was practicing in my back yard but as soon as i put a fly on it was totally different

I find a tapered leader a must for dry flys for trout but in the salt I use a straight 15-20 peice of mono or fluoro does the job but keep it short-5-6' the most.

If you are salt water fishing it does not matter!!!

I use 20; 30; 40 lb test line off of a spool!!! NO problem!!!

You must be doing something wrong!!!

I can't afford tapered leaders, only rich people can!!!

Same thing in fresh water I use straight 4;6;10lb etc:!!!
