I have set up a holding system it my garage //Sheila,s bitchin about that =but last year I lost alot of eels at the dock /because it was hot & no tide flow ==========with this system I,ve lost 1 eel in over 3 weeks =well now this morning shes saying I have to feed them //I said no, the bait shops don,t //she said they turm them quickly// I know if you keep them at the dock they get food filtered thre the water =======just curious

Save a couple of the busted up clams and feed them to em. They love clams!

I just got a minnow trap and caught boat loads of mummy cugs and threw them in with the eels. You can put dog food as bait for the cugs. Now all you do is through alittle cat/dog food in the holding tank and the food chain begins

Do you change the water at all? how big is the tank? You should check the ammonia.....if you don't change any of the water it will crash and burn....

I am surprised you lost eels at the dock, it must have gotten really hot. Last season I had them on a morring in the back of a salt pond maybe 6-7' deep. Water temp got to 78 deg no real flow either....I think a couple died but it was nothing serious. I put about 3-4 doz in a 5 gal bucket.

This year I have them at a dock maybe 4' deep but there is moving water...so far temp is up to about 65 or so I have about 50 in their and I think one died last week...probably from old age.

If you keep them at home in a closed tank like the shops (they change the water on a reg basis) but you can add a chemical that makes them quite happy and chills them out. You may want to look into this. It keeps them alive much longer. I can find out what the name is if you like.

Clam, I wouldn't worry so much about feeding them...adding any type of food will probably do more damage to the quality of the water as opposed to the good of the eels. I don't really think they'll eat in a retainer tank...if you had set it up like an eel aquarium . .. .meaning a more home-like environment, they'd probably feed, but I doubt they'll feed where your holding them. Change the water often and you should be ok. Another thing you can try is plexiglass. Cut a plexiglass divider for your tank, one that wouldn't allow eels on one side of the tank to get to the other side...of course you'd need some holes for water flow...either drill a bunch of holes smaller than the eels or drill larger holes and net the opening so they can't pass, or toss some aerater stones in each side for addes support. My point is, as you replenish your stock..you can keep track of which eels you've had the longest and use them in that order. I'm far from an eel expert, but I've toyed around with keeping things captive and what worked best for me....water quality is KING.

got friend that keeps a hose on dribble in his tank,,no air,,and put a small hole in the side for out flow,,,they keep fine all summer...out of the sun.
