Smelts

Has anyone been doing well with smelt fishing? I have been on two or three trips for smelts on fridays. The fishing has been slow. I managed to catch one smelt last friday and four baby toadfish. I hope that this friday is going to be good.

If anyone is interested in a smelt trip let me know. I can probably get a better deal - like free shanty rental. the only problem is that it is a long drive and would most likely require lodging. I have family and friends that have shanty's up in Vermont on Lake Champlain. I haven't been in years, but we used to fill 5 Gallon buckets. And as I said in a previous post - the best bait to catch smelt......smelt. Fillet the last inch to 1 1/2inches off near the tail, not only does it catch - it is durable. you can fish 3 or 4 fillets all day to fill a bucket.

Marina Bay has dried up.

You can fish for 2 tides for 1 dz. skinny fish.

Wait for the ICE !!!!!!!!!

yeah it is a haul. And planning for February is probably a safe bet, we can get a better idea as the bays freeze. Generally, Shelburne Bay where I did most of my fishing has a couple of feet of ice. I do not risk it...and neither do the guys with Shantys. Most of them drive out onto the ice with them - or at very least tow them out onto the ice with trucks. So if there is shantys on the ice and smelt biting, I should know.
