I actually picked it up from Eben last year, so credit has to go to him -

Basically, you pack the snot out of it with Super Lube, put on the side plate and crank it for a while, then open it up and put in some more so that the gear case is pretty much full with no voids.

Just make sure there's not so much that you'll feel resistance when you put the side plate back on - it will stiffen up the reel a little too much for a long nite and may force the crosswind arm off the main drive gear.

That can be really frustrating if you find yourself on the rocks during a new moon, let's say, with a good sea running, a nice bass on and realize your spool is jammed up because all the line is wound on one spot between the spool and rotor cup......

And then find yourself uttering oaths with a flashlight in your mouth and field-stripping your reel while Uncle Ezidro is bailing bass right next to ya with his trusty conventional.

Trust me, you really want to avoid that.....

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.
