If you thru-drill it first, then use a sharp-n-proper sized brad point drill bit in a hand drill, you'll be surprised at how easily the bit nose follows the thruwire hole. Just don't apply too much pressure and take your time for the first half inch or so.
The only times I ever leave the square stock anymore, is if the plug tail has a taper whose diameter closely matches the lead weight. As long as there's at least a 1/16" to spare, and your bit is sharp, it's a cakewalk.
