Thanks. I never ran one of these before. I had about 10 Alexa items that are related to outlook or explorer of which I use neither. Do you quaranteen what this program finds or just delete them??

most of the spyware that I deleted was Microsoft related. I wonder if their version would identify their own spyware?

I ran Spy Sweeper after I ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware and spy sweeper came up totally empty. I wonder if this stuff is like regular virus programs and any good one is enough...

SpySweeper is ok.
Ad-Aware, Spybot, and the new MS scanner are all very good programs.

Guys,
Seriously considering buying a program but, I have no clue as to what is out there. I'm running the Microsoft program along with the free download from Adaware. They both find about 5 a week on my home PC. I need some real time protection.

I use a combination of Spybot, Microsoft Beta1 and Firefox. Spybot first then Beta1 then Firefox and the machine purrs like a kitten. Going to sign up for Napster next for music downloads without the worry of stuff that used to come through on Kazaalite etc. Got to have more music and doing it legally is more comforting.

I just fixed another pc with Spysweeper.
It was reel slow, pop-ups galore and couldn't even access internet. I ran Adaware and Spybot but didn't solve problem.
I went and bought Spysweeper($19.99 at CompUSA) and it removed over 8000 items. Some wouldn't deleate the first time so I had to run it again in Safe mode(John R's advice).
PC works like a champ again.

I've had nothing but problems with Microsoft's freebie. It
interferes with other programs especially those that require the downloading of updates off the net.The end result would a complete and total lockup while installing updates requiring
me to manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Some spyware manages to elude programs like those mentioned above as well as spybot.
Go to your control panel and choose "ad/remove programs."
If you see anything funky that shouldn't be there, and the spyware hasn't removed it, chances are it needs to be deleted manuallly.

The only sure fire way to get rid of spyware is to "nuke" your pc and reload it from scratch. I have probably spent upwards of a day and a 1/2 sometimes trying to clean up PC's of spyware/adware.
Now if it takes more than 2 hours i just nuke it, at least that way I know it will be all set when I'm done.
another thing that helps is to stay off of the "joke" sites. these things are filthy w/ spyware. same goes for Free Fonts, Free Pics, Free Music and anything else w/ the word free.
I have been playing w/ the new Microsoft Spyware package and it does show some promise but it still isn't a 100%

microsoft browser creates spyware problems
and they say their security concious....PFFFFF
quote: James E. Gaskin, Network World, 03/28/05
On my primary test PC running Windows XP Home, I use Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. There were 739 spyware threats found. On my personal PC, running Firefox and Mozilla's Thunderbird e-mail application, there were 11 spyware instances. Each of those 11 was an Internet Explorer exploit or cookie that snuck in the few times I had to use Internet Explorer for certain Web sites.
