I guess I am struggling with wanting some level of stability back in my life, and there really is no such thing in the software space.....if you work for a best-of-breed application provider, life (selling) is REALLY hard and turnover is unbeleivable, yet the promise of IPO and/or acquisition might still exist....but if you work for a large integrated suite provider, selling is easier but there is less money in it, and often the loyalty is non-existent.

What happened to this industry along the way...??

Massive consolidation the past 5 years. IPO's arn't that they used to be, and most likely never will for the average lacky. Risk is relative, you know that

Work with them everyday, good product. Does what its supposed to. Software wars will go on forever though, if possible check with someone already in that position or at your interview, ask what the person whom filled the role you are applying for would say at their exit interview.
