bummer chef... i agree with th eguide theory. take a cotton ball and swish it around the guides. If there is cotton dangling from your guide, you need to replace it.

how old is that reel? how old is that drag? on ht100 drags, i would replace them either weekly, monthly, or when needed as determined by the amount of times that reel went fishing, how often it had good fish on, and how often it was under water. ht100's do require maintenance to clean them of salt and oil deposits to keep them clean and smoothe. also, make sure there is no salt build up inside the spool where the drags are placed. slat build up was one of the main reason my drags became sticky on these ht100 dragged reels.

also, whenever you are casting or spinning w/ lighter lures or eels, you need to make sure the line s going on somewhat tight or else it will get burried into itself and break. you seem to know that, and worked on it too.

I wish that I had your problems when fishing. I have never caught a bass
on eels yet. I have tried though.

Nope , the guides are all good, no niks. Guy who i respect at he tackle shop said the drag was all good, and it was just the loose line. Its mono too , hate braid. Is the line on a 704z gonna bury its self easier then with the 6500, which ive never had this problem with. Reel is used, got it from one of the guys here.

704 is a good reel, never had problems with Mono on it; probably just the loose line thing from light eels into a headwind...

Chef, i think your problem is that you are catching fish that are too big. try targeting some smaller fish and the problem should go away
