My perception is that there are A LOT of guys out there that have caught 50's and the last thing they want is for anyone to know about it. They're very secretive about how many, how big, and where they catch fish. But I do agree that some people want to brag about it.
Here's a true story:
I was fishing an unnamed place where most people drive on to the beach. I was trying to get off the beach but the track was blocked by a truck that failed to air-down and two guys were frantically trying to dig the truck out (this is about 1:00a). One guy is so drunk that as he was airing down one of the rear tires (still sideways in the middle of the track) he lost his balance and smacked his face on the rear fender. The other guy walked over to me to apologize for blocking and said they'd be out soon...he reeked of alcohol. He also bragged that he'd caught a 55 lber there the night before.
He ran back to his truck and gunned the engine, spraying tons of sand in the face of his buddy who was still behind the truck, recovering from smacking his face. They eventually got unstuck and I left the beach.
The next day, I went to a local tackle shop and sure enough, there's a brand new picture on the bulletin board, showing these too yahoos with a 53 pound fish! So I'm guessing that catching a 50 is a much luck as anything else.
