I was going to read the whole thread as it looked like an interesting topic but 13 pages is way to long for my ADD...I would rather fish then read

I just scanned this whole thread. One of the original thoughts was the youngsters don't put in the time and don't know how to keep quiet. They are content to fish dusk and dawn and not burn the midnight oil.

Old guys by contrast fished all night every night kept their mouths shut, yada yada yada.

I don't think one important element has been mentioned.

MONEY

A lot of the guys who broke me in, who fished every day, who guarded their secrets, quit when they could no longer sell a couple of boxes of fish a day.

The guys I fish with now are mostly younger than me. (50) They are the ones I run into in the middle of the night. The old guys sit home and watch the tube and go to bed at 10:30.

So who is the true fisherman?
