Maybe someone can help me.
I thought I remember seeing a thread somewhere on a how to disassemble a Van stall spinning reel to change the oil and grease, does anyone know where???

Bill is correct. You will void the warrenty if you open the reel.

for a $600 plus reel I would leave it to the experts, Steve has 11 of them and never broke the seal once, there really is no need to its completly watertight, nothing ever goes wrong. Send it back once a year and let them service it

Slip; I fished mine 3 seasons w/o a problem and never more than a rinse before I finally got smart and sent it back; new drag washers were a key this season....

Read the warranty that comes with a Van Staal. Exactly what is warrantied. Bearings? Nope, wear part. Shaft sleeve? Nope, wear part. Shaft? Nope, wear part. Gears? Nope, wear part. Drag system? Nope, wear part. So your not voiding anything.

I can bash all I want because I have two of them................

well maybe none of his leaked oil out the side like mine.

It will not void the warranty, I bought it used and their warranty is not worth the paper it's printed on. I've heard enough stories of guys sending them in for yearly check ups and getting billed large bills for upgrades to new parts. I don't need new parts. VS sent me a seal and a gasket I ordered from them a couple weeks ago and since the oil was leaking out of the supposed sealed reel, I need to maintain it because there could be salt water in there now. Also it's missing some oil now so I want to fill it up. I bought the reel and didn't use it for a year maybe, then used it twice and the oil leaked out.

I actually refurb'd a 704 greenie that was my back up for a few yyrs and I got rid of it, no need for a back up.

Sorry but I love me 706's A 704 is half the reel IMHO.I know if I use the Van Staal i will fall an break it.It's to expensive i think i will sell it an buy more plugs.

Usually guys get whacked with big bills when they buy the reel used as it's not under warranty then. I've heard a few horror stories as well, but almost always it's an old reel someone bought on eBay that has the old stainless main shaft.

Being able to fall on it, rest it on rocks, and generally beat it up is why people buy a VS.

Screw the anodizing, use it like it was intended.

Wow! Talk about an invetsment. 11 Van Stals? If my calcs are right at 90.00 bucks a tuneup thats 990.00 a year for lube oil and filter jobs just for your reels. That's insane!

thanks Pete, but my reel had been recently maintained just before I bought it so I would think it is up to date but I see no need to send it in yet. I'm not rich.

I fell on my Van Staal 2 weeks ago. Got some nasty rock rash on the bottom but none the worse for wear.
I have used bailess 704s all my life. I fish very hard...harder than most guys on the board as I will end up at around 110 to 125 nights in the surf. I am in the water a lot and I use to clean my 704 drag washers every 2nd trip due to salt buildup. I started in April with my VS 250 and I have NOT done anything but rinse it with fresh water all year. Still performing like brand new...although it certainly looks like a used reel now.

Me, I'll never go back to Penn for the surf. The VS250 is just a superior piece of equipment.

If they're still doing it like they used to, once you send the reel in for service (even though you bought it used) it will then be under warranty. Every serial # on the reel is matched to a name in their computer system so they know it is a used reel. When you send it in all the data will be updated.

Don't give up on that reel yet! It's still the best solution out there.

Ever try buying a spool for a Saltiga? Last I checked it's pretty much impossible short of buying one from overseas somewhere. I haven't heard of anyone getting the reel serviced yet, but I'd be interested in what happens then. Dealing with Daiwa USA when I tried to track down spare spools was more then irritating.

I'm not sure judging the quality of a $600+ reel just by the ability to buy a spare spool makes a whole lot of sense when there are a plethora of top-notch features about the reel. That's almost like saying a VS isn't worth the money because they sometimes leak oil, or the drag knob tolerance is messed up causing the knob to loosen sometimes when fighting a fish -- oh wait that's why I sold my VS's.

So far my Saltigas have been problem-free.

While I haven't sent in my Saltigas for service yet after almost 2 years of use (they don't need it yet - but I will this winter), the customer service rep I spoke to last year was very helpful and informed me that Daiwa USA's policy is $15 or so for an annual service. We'll see...

Bruc, if it's the new version with the hex fitting on the handle housing, it's easy to do yourself.

The real beech is getting an older one open.

Don't worry about the warranty. As Jeff said, almost everything in the damn things are "wear and tear" items

If you can afford 11 reels, why not just buy one, use it for a year, junk it and replace it? Keep the spool for a spare. It costs less than getting all 11 serviced every year

He doesnt use them all, he has the number 3 reel made etc... collectors items .He also get a huge discount when buying them
