i do pick up a lot of garbage when i'm out. i taught my three year old daughter this summer that when we're out swimming, we pick up any trash that we see float by. this pertains mostly to plastic bags and labels, since sea turtles seem to eat this stuff, thinking that it's jellyfish. every time that we pick up trash, she says that we just saved a turtle and a dolphin, and smiles from ear to ear. she's also great on the beach yelling at people that leave trash when they decide to leave for a day. it's amazing how many people will get up, pack up their towels and chairs, and leave a dozen cigarette butts and some cups in the sand. my little trash nazi lets them have it, using her three year old "outside" voice. it's hard not to look like an ass when a three year old girl in a disney bathing suit is giving you the business about leaving trash on the beach.
as for me, i wear a semi-dry top in the surf, and it has a big pouch on the front. this weekend i picked up three balloons, and lots of plastic labels that were either floating or recently washed up. i hit a jetty, and noticed lots of beer cans, bait wrappers, and an old chair. they were all thrown down into a crevice between two rocks. i did not pick them up, since the waves were really washing over the jetty pretty steadily. it's funny though that there is a certain ethnicity that is always fishing from this exact spot. i recently programmed a local F&G warden's number into my phone, so he'll get a call next time i see these so called "sportsmen".
i also get my blood to boil every time a see a smoker throw a cigarette butt out the window of their car. god forbid they put a butt in their ashtray.

It's bad karma to litter. The fish gods will punish you! They award however when you anti-litter.

You want to be careful teaching someone that young on picking up trash. Around my parts, you will find syringes as well as used protection...errrr...rubbas. Not off-topic, just a word of advice.

If there was a clean up at any location then someone should inform the people that have influence regarding our efforts such as town officials, DEM, CMRC, etc
This will give them the signal that fishermen are OK, however it nay also back fire. What do you think?
