Years back I remember guys spraying the bucktail on Kastmasters with it and swearing by it. (in both salt and freshwater). Only thing I spray with it is my manley's
Not trying to hijack, just offering some info. Just because it's petroleum based does not mean that it is the only thing in there. The MSDS lists " non hazardous materials" as less than 10 % of the content, I would venture a guess that herring oil would fall into this category. Check this site out and look in the sidebar entitled "scent secrets" they also talk about it.
Out in michigan a lot of people swear on wd-40 for walleye fishing. It was real popular to spray it on a mister twister while jiggin for walleye, never tried it but saw that it was somewhat effective.
