I swithed to Amzoil Synthetic a few years ago for my 200HP Johnson at $20 a gallon. Synthetic oil runs cleaner and produces a-lot less buildup in the cylinders which is the major cause of seizer in carborator outboards. It also smokes a little less. If I were running a motor on warranty, or running an OptiMax, or Etech I would run the factory stuff. Oil is expensive, but certainly not as much as a new motor, or down time during the summer.

West Marine oil is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get. It's always changing they just buy what is the cheapest at that time and slap thier name on it. I don't know if this is true on a 2 stroke, but I would think that constantly changing oil brands/types of oil wouldn't be good for the motor.

Specialist,,,,I always shop there too, great people.
Wait for the open house, the price may go down, or at least you get a store discount. I buy the 2 1/2 gallon jugs to save some $, then I refill my gallon jugs to keep on board.

See ya out there.

It's a scam, most of the dealers will tell you that to get you to buy the oil from them. Look at the API specs on the label, if the specs are the same it's the same oil.
