give it a try steelhead, I've layered paints, it's a fine line, you can't go to heavy with the black, but, you get some nice subtle hints show thru.. do them all while they are wet  
I've done a blurple/gold on needles, with a green/blue haze.. looks like eel skin in the water |

I've done it with a silver or gold over a solid color. The solid colors I've found to be harder to control.
