Great point, Joe! You first have to decide generally the size of eels you like to throw, or simply are available around you at a given time! No one rod is "best" for throwing eels without addressing their size/ weight. I use off-the-shelf Spinning rods, but use one of three depending (works for me):

-- Lami Arra 10': for large to outsized eels in big/ rocky water where power is needed...

--St. Croix Ben Doeer 10': Medium eels... Rocks or sandy areas ok...

--Ugly Stick 10': Believe it or not, my "ideal" rod for pitching mid- size snakes on sand beaches, including the Cape. This rod has never failed me yet, and has the perfect blend of tip- whip, and backbone, for this task! (Best fight I ever had from surf-- without the need to worry about rocks & obstructions-- was a 41lb.er from Truro on this rod, with 17 lb. mono!)
