Hold the reel upright with the handle facing right, just like when it would be mounted on your rod. Loosen the screw, pull it out as far as it will travel, hold it and rotate the entire side plate towards you. It should move about an inch and a half and come free.

Deep maroon could be any time from the mid 1960s up to the 1980s. They went to a lighter, brighter red sometime in the early 80s. You can't tell the year by the number on the reel foot--that's just the part number (shared with the Surfmaster 200, which is where the 200 part of it comes in).
I got my deep maroon one in the early 1970s from Bradlees in Falmouth.

All parts are available for the 140. Excellent reel, but slow as paint drying on retrieve. I have one made in the 40's and still fish with it. If you have trouble controlling the cast you can mag that reel. if you do decide to do so PM me and include a fax number. I will fax you the instruction sheet and the source for mags.

If you got one with the maroon bakelite spool with fins inside, you won't need to mag it . You really don't need to mag any of them! Congrats on your score!
