Raider maybe if you had asked for coffee instead of joe they would have know what you wanted. At the local Coofee shop a ask the wastress for a cup of joe they didn't have a clue and they speak english graduated High School and they are both in College.

Except that they sell bulk coffee in a cardboard container as a "Box of Joe" at DDs. And she also knew what "joe" was when she filled the three other boxes

You must of wiped out their inventory of already brewed coffee. It could have been an honest mistake. I know your going to say how can you mistake water for coffee?
To tell you the truth I don't know but maybe when she was pouring the water the transparency of the water and the box of Joe being brown may have been the reason.
Knowing me I would have responded the same way as you but I would poured the water completely out.
