Fish Finder
This weekend I am hoping to get to install my new fishfinder/gps. It doesn't seem to hard to do. My nieghbors probably think I am a bit soft, 2 of them drove by my house last night while I had the garage door open. I was sitting in my yak in the garage trying to find the perfect position for the ff. They all think I am a fishaholic, but I say nay , Fishaholic is my friend Dave
Here is my new toy for the yak

reel -looks like a sweet unit. Good luck with it. I have always used the piranha along with a handheld gps, but now that I'm in the market for a new gps, that looks like it might be a cool option to look at. Thanks man.

Looks great, from what I hear you definately will not be disappointed with that ff/gps. When it says 4nm, I guess I'm out of luck which is a bummer. Apparently Hummingbird has a winner with that unit.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think the installed navigational stuff goes 4nm so I'm not sure if it would include Block.

I played with it in the store and went out to the Bahamas, that's about 70 miles off shore and it was still going, this thing covers the entire coast and then some, it is their Uni-Map, making it so you do not need to download maps and such, it's in there, the Vineyard, the Block, hopin you might get a peek at it this summer

Impressive little toy you got there. All I got is a scotty and an anchor an pulley system. I guess i'm old school.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

The install went very easy, I have a small dry bag inside the hull for the 12v battery..

Reel...be great to hook up with ya for some yakin' fishin'... still fairly new to it. picked up a couple of yaks last year but had knee surgery that kept me out of the boat for last half of season... I am on the south shore... drop me a note, if you don't mind I would love to see how you have everything set up

I gotta find a better battery source than the 8 AA's. Only lasted about 3 hrs, which is obviously not long enough
It does work sweet, lots of waypoints and being able to track your drift is nice. Temp even worked thru the hull, that and being able to see my speed was pretty cool. Even found a hole in a spot I have fished for many years I did not know existed.

Cabelas has a good deal-two rechargeable batteries including charger for short dough, keep one charging and use the other. Water tight box and you are all set. I still haven't permantely mounted all my stuff but I do like the light weight of the batteries and the extended run time. I'm probably going to go with the handheld Garmin 76 and ram mount with AAA's and run the fishfinder with the batteries.

2 rechargeable 12v?....gonna have to look into that. The reason i went with the ff/gps all in one is I feel like I am starting to clutter up the cockpit. I am 6'-1" and around 230#, not much room in there as is
Is it wrong to be at work but crave to be in my yak? That is all I think about. I haven't gone large from it yet, but I have caught everytime out. What a feeling!

Thinking about the "Dark Side" makes the work day go by much faster-lol. If you go on thier site and type in "rechargeable batteries," it will show several as well as the ones I am talking about...the complete package so to speak. It is thier own brand in green.
I hear ya' about keeping clutter to a minimum especially because being dumped is bound to happen.

FWIW, You might note that that finder ( like allot of Humminbird finders) is rated to run on 10-20VDC. If you start with a 14 -16V battery pack/source, you'll take allot longer to drop below that 10 V threshhold.

I have the 383c h-bird combo. Nice little unit for the money. Since it has a big draw with all the extra features of GPS, Dual Freq., Mapping, etc, AA's will not cut it. 8 AA 2500 MAH batteries work well with basic Pirhana series or equivalant. A 12 volt 7amp battery gets me about 2 trips or 10 hours with the 383 C. Recommend buying 2 12 volt 7ampers and have em together to swap over or re-charge a single battery after every trip. One more option would be the slightly larger 12 volt 10AMP sealed acid battery to get two 6 hour trips before recharge.
