Seeing as I have a close encounter with one almost every time at one spot I've gotten over it...
What was he after? Rigged eels? Bunker Juice? Scented Surf Hogs? Or was he getting romantic with your plug bag?

I whacked a skunk in the head with a 6' 2X4 one time (long story) and managed to do so without getting sprayed. Maybe you should carry a 2X4?

Tons of them along the beaches on Long Island. I'd see them all the time on the access roads driving in.
