The eel's revenge. This is strange.

Here is one strange, sort of philosophical thought or thoughts.

Some nights, when it is late, and I have my cooler full of eels and a whole lot of quiet. I'm scrounging about the eel cage trying to get an eel and once I get one just right in the burlap cloth and the eel freezes and it seems like it is bracing for the metal, I sometimes get this weird feeling and or thought, and here it is.

'Could these eels really be the reincarnations of people who had done bad things in their former life? I also think that these eels, like pigs or dolphin/Flipper, know what they are in for, it is almost like I can see it in their eyes.' Then I hook them up, and sometimes I can imagine what it would be like if someone were to stick a hook under my jaw and rip it out my nose or between my eyes, and wait!, it isn't done yet. Then I am hoisted up and tossed into the water, much like the Romans would throw the criminals to the lions and watch them get eaten, or what the guy with no face wanted to do to Dr. Hannibal Lecter with the wild pigs/boars. And if things go well for the fisherman, there will be bass all around, big nasty bass that just want to inhale that eel like Jonah was in the whale. Or even worse for that eel, bluefish, and like a good Jaws episode, bits and pieces of the eel get chopped off but it doesn't die, no, despite getting all sorts of bite marks and having only, maybe 20% of its body/head left, it still wiggles and is still alive, only to be tossed out again to see if the big bass or bluefish or anything will come to eat it.

Could this be the punishment for those kind of people who prey on the weak? Is this too deep and philosophical? Should we vote for Deval Patrick? Now don't get me wrong, the eel is still my friend, and like many of you, if one catches me one big bass or many, I'll think about letting it go no matter how many bites it has or how badly its lips are ripped out or how blind it is, sometimes Bassyius just wonders . . .

Here is where the revenge part comes in. One night, my eel twists itself up in to a mono-pretzel. I'm trying to untangle it when the eel wraps its body around my finger like a hungry anaconda on a hapless gazelle and the hook point of the 5/0 Gamma hook is right in my left pointer finger and it seemed like the eel knew it and proceeded to squeeze the hook deeply into my finger. I was worried because I had no idea of the strength potential of this thing, and thankfully it didn't have much in it after the initial squeeze. I thought about torturing this thing as retribution but didn't. After I got the eel off, the hook off, re-rigged, I put it on the hook and casted it out. I'll be sure to not let that happen again.

My thought that my father and I always mention is 'man it must suck to go flying through the air with a hook in your mouth and then get yanked back in

Usually i whisper to the eels before i hook them and tell them if fish have teeth, pull on the line 3 times and i will reel you back in fast... So far they haven't listened ...

Funny, last night, I was sort of talking to my eel (in my head). He was a good size, full of life and was doing some nice wiggling in the water. I told, you're the one, you're gonna get me the big bass, I was using it for over 1/2 hr and it was still going strong. A few cast later, bang, 80% was gone, just a few inches of head still squirming on my hook. Man, life sucks.

LOL! As I sit at my keyboard after reading the replies, I laugh out loud and hope like hell you all enjoyed my private, most innermost thoughts regarding the eels I'm using for bait. Like the "Quickening" in the movie the Highlander, I could feel the crimes committed by the person in the past, now coming back to life as an eel and paying for his/her crimes as fishbait. Could it be late at night?, could I be tired?, what exactly did I do in college?, wait a minute, I went to college?

LOL is right, this is funny chit. the closing your eyes idea is good, I find it hard to let the fish take line when you see a big tail breach the service 10 yards off the rocks. all I want to do is set that damn hook!

Ok, ok, you got me.

Hooked and Cooked! This guy is baked!, but the thoughts are real and I can't get them out of my head. The eel talks to me like the fish in Cheech and Chong, Cheech and Chong go eeling along the Elizabeths. "Here . . . take this . . . I'm, (cough, cough), on!"

Get the same feeling sometimes when I smack them on a rock to slow em down. On the cape beaches there are no rocks so I have to smack them on my knee. I would hate to be an eel. But I always redeem myself at the end of the season when I "Release the eels" whatever I have left go back to the sea at that time. I guess surf fishermen have feelings too - until I feel a cow uncork on one - usually knocks me back to my senses.

I get the same feeling when cutting green crabs in half.

One time an eel slipped out of my bag and was lost.

I'm pretty sure the little sucker knew my ATM pin number.

To this day I always go over my bank statement twice...just to be sure.
