My favorite Red line (from one of the books about him). He's wrapped up Bird's Contract and tehn teh agent starts talking about an All-Start bonus.
"Hell for $1M a year, I ougta get money back if he's not an All-Star".
End of discussion.
RIP Red!

I was a big celtics fan in the 70's and 80's. don't watch much anymore.
Red was one of a kind. So shrewd at picking guys who would work out in the Boston team system and even shrewder in making the deals to get the guys he picked into Celtic uniforms.

He was unique, who else could have managed to transform a pick for Joe Barry Carrol into Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish. RIP Red.

Lots of people also don't realize that Red drafted Bird when he was an unhearalded junior at Indiana State. Because Bird didn't come out for the draft that year, the Celts retained his rights until the next draft, in June of the following year--after Bird single-handedly led Indiana State to the NCAA Finals.
Cowens was another great pick---someone with a lot of talent who flew below the radar in college, but was perfectly suited to the Celtics' system.
Paul Westphall for Charlie Scott and Paul Silas--another one of Red's steals.
