Sponge Bob gets a good one

I knew it was only a matter of time till I hooked into something big with that rod and landed it. No video, since I was in the float tube, but figured you guys would enjoy the picture. 6lb 2oz Smallmouth bass while live linning a yellow perch on a Cape Pond. For those who don't fresh water fish, a 6lb smallie is equivalent to a 40lb striper.

Fat.
Hardest fighting fish I ever caught.
I used to go to a place in ME where there was nothing but smallies & eels.
Used to catch 6-8 in. smallmouth on 4#trout gear.
Take drag & tailwalk & jump 3 feet out of the water.

I'm just trying to picture a grown man in a float tube with waders and all the gear using a Sponge Bob rod?
Nice catch.

Thats a BIG smallmouth/bronzeback.
My biggest ever was only 3 1/2 lbs in the Adiondacks NY.Ive gotten quite a few over 2lbs but that 6 lb'er, thats in a different league altogether.
Most fun thing about smallmouths is they are airbone many times before you even know they are hooked.
Very Nice!

That's AWESOME Roy
quite a challenge on that little stick of yours.
How is the reel holding up? have you had to clean or lube it yet?
You have THE touch

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.

1984 was a warning, not a guidebook!

It's time more people spoke up with the truth. Every time we let a leftist lie go uncorrected, the commies get stronger.

The reason I ask is I used to take my kids fishing with thier Mickey Mouse rods and those little rods caught some nice size fish!!! Just curious as to why that is Roy's rod of choice?

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Awesome catch. In a world of $700 reels and $300 rods, it's cool to be reminded how complex and expensive we make this sport. Next crabby patty is on me.

Thanks guys. The rod started as a dare, someone said I couldn't get a big fish on it and from there it's history. I have spent so much money in gear through out my life and sometimes I like to bring my self back to reality. Im always trying new things in the line of fishing. One thing I miss is that nervouse feeling I use to get when fighting a fish & boy do I get it on that little thing. If you ever watched one of the videos I can't stop laughing. It's definatly a lot of fun and for $8.88 at Wally world you can't beat it. It's getting it's on page on my site and I might even use it to go for Mass Wildlifes angler of the year award. All the parts are original and unchanged except for the line I had to replace it after live linning pogies for bass & blues. They didn't leave much on the reel after a few break offs..lol , but its still 8lb test. I have taken it apart a few times to clean and lube it, especialy after saltwater. They rust pretty quick in the salt. I have to admit they are built pretty well. It's almost like tricking Murphy of Murphy's law " what can go wrong, will go wrong" little does he know Sponge Bob's got some Mojo.........Plain and simple its all fun.

Thanks again guys

Way cool, RoyL.

Smallmouth are awesome fighters - I accidently hook them down in reservior near my house and some are pretty decent sized. No where as FAT as that porker. Love how acrobatic the SMB are.

I would catch some in rivers while trout fishing and use to think I had gotten mother of all trout only to find out it was just a med sized SMB...... LOL.

I'm going to try using rod like that. My daughter has a Barbie rod and I have a Sandy (friend of Sponge Bob's) outfit as well.

that's awesome Roy, nice fish man! have you tried to catch stripers with it yet? If you landed a big striper on that thing I think it would have to be some kind of record....
