after- if you thin and spray with a detail gun no sanding needed. if you use spray bomb it sometimes goes on a little grainy.

If you're going to HD buy the Rustoleum sandable primer. It's cheap (approx 3 bux a can) and it dries nice and level. Give it a light sanding after it dries, wipe it down, blow it off and you're good to go.
I buy it by the 6 can case!!

If you sand too fine the paint will have nothing to grab. I don't go any finer than 220 grit.

Never had a problem......paint sticks to the primer, no problems.

I have a gallon of Bins, I dip my plugs in it and hang
this lets the primer into the holes so the inside is also
primed

I had a lot of failures doing that.

Mind if I ask what kind of failures? The only thing I would worry about with the dip is having too thick of a coat, but I like the thought of primer in the through holes.

The bin stuck to the wood and the back of the paint.
The failures always seemed to be in the bin itself.
Of course your results may vary.

Why do you need primer in the holes? Primer is to enhance paint adhesion only! Get the sealer in the holes. That should take care of it!
