I usually use A thread. That debate on strength has gone on forever. I have used A & C thread and have never had a failure.....

No matter what you use for size it will be strong enough. Multiple wraps of a thread are extremely strong, plus your holding a guide, not the Titanic.
I use size A for underwraps whether it be nylon or metallic. For overwraps I sometimes use A. But usually I try to use C or D.
Like Tlap said.....usually depends on what is in your thread box at the time.
Bottom line is that it is easier to overwrap with a bigger thread than the underwrap. You can use same sizes but this requires more attention to detail.
I really take a liking to the size C Trimars threads....sweet.
I read that Gudebrod came out with a new size B.

I use all A for guides underwraps and overwraps. I also use A for underwraps for crosswraps where I use one.
I use C or D over the cork tape near the reel seat and up the taper from the blank. I may also occasionally use a D thread along with A in a cross wrap depending on what I'm trying to get for a look.
With practice , you can make A thread wraps look better than D. They also cover better with finish. A threads have all the strength you'll ever need.
