The 229 is probably the most versatile size. Works well with either 25# mono or 65# braid.

The 220 is good if you use braid, but it's a little thin in capacity for mono over 20#, and margainal with 20.

The 235 is best used with heavy mono or 80# braid.

And spend the extra dough for the P-series, with the aluminum spool and frame, and all metal handle

I have the 235. Stock drag from Newell was horrid when I bought mine.
Maybe improved? Swapped out to smoothies and then to Penn's HT drag where it works fine.

Decent customer service from Newell. Had one of the spool bearings get rusted, made a call and had two of the newer style bearings sent out for free.

I use a 220 for distance plugs (pencils, tins) and a 235 for bait.

Same here. My 235 dates back to the mid-80s and the drag wasn't the greatest.

But my new P-series 220s and 229 have a fantastic drag
