As John said , your line is too heavy. Guys land 50 pound fish at hatteras with 15 pound mono . If your line is breaking cause the fish run too fast (or whatever you meant) , your drag is not set correctly. For 15 pound line , you want no more than 5 pounds of pull and i would go with less since you are inexperienced anglers. Use a leader at least 3 feet long , about 30 pound test. That will solve abrasion problems. An even longer leader is better.
