For male vocalist you should check out Jeff Buckley's Grace. The closest I could compare him to would be early Van. Jimmy Page said it was his favorite CD of the 90s.
For females the guy who mentioned Ella hit the nail right on the head. Otherwise for pop stuff Linda Ronstadt is pretty amazing.

that is a great disc...so sad he died so young...he would have been huge......one of my favorites for sure....

I actually own the early CD that had the raw live tracks of some of the tunes on Grace. It's really amazing.
Ian Gillian
Definitely. Best song was still "Child in Time".
1968?
Dio is up there. Robert Plant.
Amy Lee from Evanescance & Jewel
I actually saw Jewel the fist time she ever played in Boston.
Chris Cornell
I'll think of more............
Eddie Vedder? Good first album. Not groundbreaking, not spectacular, just good. I wish he just shut up after that. But he can't.
Green River and Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone. Much better.
And my pick for the SSB will always be Rene Rancourt.
Iceman I'll agree...I'm a big Black Crowes fan ....Shake Your MoneyMaker is probably one of the top 10 best albums of the 90's
Can I add one to the Website waiting to happen.....
Michelle Branch.
Black Crowes were fantastic.
Another one I saw on Lansdowne St.(Before Soundgarden.)
April or May 1990. I remember that one because I was still 20.
They only checked the last two digits of my ID.
First show I ever got to drink at.
I caught her when she was opening for Bob Dylan at the Strand in Providence one year, before she hit it big.
Weird to think of Dylan in a tiny venue like that.
Jewel was the bonus though. I was jammed up against the stage looking up. Jewel was sporting her typical short skirt. What a show.
I got dragged to Edwin McCain. He was OK.
Jewel was the opener. Never even heard of her until then.
I was impressed. Not just easy on the eyes. No backup band.
Axis?
I saw Dylan once. Opened for the Dead at Highgate,VT
5 shows until "The End?
1995?
I left during his set to get more beer. I was the guy in the black T-shirt at that show.
Left Highgate went straight to Laconia.
That was one long f'n week.
I still have one unripped intact ticket for that show.
The last tour of Jerry Garcia.
-Howlin' Wolf
-Gram Parsons
-Jon Anderson (Yes)
-new entry - Jim James (My Morning Jacket)
" the fisherman taking a great cod line to which he fasteneth a peece of lobster and threwes it into the sea. The rockfish biting at it, he pulls her to him and knockes her on the head with a sticke."
oh and one of my favorites that I don't think was mentioned is Thom York of Radiohead
I agree. I'm sure his voice rubs some the wrong way, but it works for me. His solo album was pretty solid. Different, but good.
There really aren't any weak Radiohead albums, except maybe Pablo Honey. OK Computer and Hail to the Thief are probably my favorites, but even after all this time my favorite Radiohead album tends to vary month to month...
Lots of nice unreleased tracks on Limewire and other services as well as an impressive collection of live footage on YouTube.
