Surf Fishing has slowed nearly everywhere
I called several of my buds around RI, cape and islands and even LI last night and surf fishing ranged to dead to a slow pick of small fish to feeding rat blues expensive bait. (Boat fishing was OK...not gangbusters but OK) This is disturbing. I doubt it could be over YET. The water temp has been falling fast and the weather has been lets-say somewhat non-condusive to fishing lately. I actually stayed home last night to watch "Fish-On" instead of actually going fishing myself! I plan to go tonight for a few hours but I will just cherry pick a couple places on the tides and come home until it picks up. I hope November is better.

Looks like its going to be a shorter season (vs. last year) due to the colder-than-normal temperatures we've been getting.
Big mass of cold Arctic air is coming down.
Blame the Canadians.

Last year we seemed to have strong warm temps which started to crash in October followed by a fairly mild November which seemed - with a great supply of bait - to keep the last moving fish slowly heading south. There was fishing thru the end of November and into December with big bass still being caught.
Now they are saying that we're in a full winter jet stream with the air from Canada making a wide swath into the interior of the US before pushing out thru the Mid-Atlantic states. New England is hard on the cold side of that line so expect some colder than average days and nights and few warm pushing winds

Exactly why I posted my " Well... I'm done..." thread.
I guess it's time to investigate a new rod & reel for next "season."
Oh... and waders, and a surf bag, ...
BTW:
I tried watching Fish On but didn't really care for it. I mean, I'm all fer' chicks in bikinis but either show chicks in bikinis or show fishing. I can't concentrate on both!
Tight lines,
Rob

In the past , you could look forward to the biggest blues of the season in RI the last couple of weeks of November. You can also go out to Montauk for usually good striper fishing through thanksgiving. You never know last year that lady caught a 48 pounder in RI in Dec!

Water Temps around Point Judith are down almost 4^ from where they were this time last season. Temps on Sunday morning were in the 53-55^ range. And there is no warmup in sight. I think we better get ready for a cold winter.

There was plenty of fish out off Block Island monday. The charter captain predicted the beach fishing would "break wide open with some stable weather". I'm not giving up yet.

denis, he gave me the option of the beach or Block. I just enjoy being out on SW Ledge. There was a boat from Montauk trolling near us (Andy was too) so I think we picked the right spot.

Not Done Yet
Just got back from Narragansett! Hit the surf at around 3 o'clock this afternoon and had my hands full till I left at 5:300. Caught about 20 - 30 rat blues in between 4 nice size schoolies I keeper at 32" and a large blue 15 - 18 lbs. All on a popper with a teaser, had 4 doubles.
I think the weather last Sat. just slowed things down for a couple of days. I guess we'll see, I went out over the weekend and got the skunk like so many others , but had to try it again and I am glad I did !!
P.S. No pictures this time , I let everything go ! Don't give up yet!

How About This One ?
Go Figure !!
Outdoor Notes by Tom Meade: A 57-inch 10-year-old lands 51-inch striper
10/27/2002
Ten-year-old Derek Stritzinger
, fishing with his father, Skip
, caught a 50-pound striper on the south side of Block Island last weekend. "We went with 30-plus eels, and this was caught on the last and smallest," said Skip. "Hauled the boat on Sunday, so this will be a nice memory to get us through the winter. The fish was 51 inches; Derek is 57 inches."
The bass was the largest striper that the Narragansett Middle School student has caught, but it was the sixth bass of more than 40 pounds that he has landed this season. Most anglers will never catch a 40-pounder in a lifetime of fishing.
Derek and his dad fish with relatively light tackle, flipping eels without weight, allowing the bait to swim toward the bottom. Derek caught his personal record in 55 feet of water off the south side of the island.
The father-and-son team have been fishing together since Derek was 5.

I did OK last night....it was somewhat quiet but not dead. All my fish were keepers but there were no (what I would call) big fish. (I had 4 fish and a couple bumbs) I tossed every plug in my bag last night, the most productive plug was a chartrusse green/yellow tatoo darter. I rarely fish that color but it worked well last night. It was very dark where I was...I mean really black, it was clear and the water was calm, light surf and no fishermen in sight. It was pretty cold too, I had to break out the neo-gloves. I did not bring eels. I fished for about 3 hours. I don't think it is over but the seasons are a changin....

It is not over at the Canal!!!
I went Monday night & was into a tremendous amount of Striped Bass all evening!
The Schools got bigger as the night progressed!...
We were catching bass on just about every cast!
However,
It was so cold that the National Weather Service should have issued a Brass Monkey Warning!!!
