I know a guy has caught tons of 25 lb plus fish over the last several years. He always uses this method on the beach to estimate what the weight will be. He's told me that he's never been off more than about 2-3 pounds, and that is in the spring when I guess this method systematically overestimates weight by about a pound or two(for 25 lb plus fish). After mid-summer he claims it's right on.

I like it, because I don't like killing fish except for a couple good meals a year. It's close enough for me.
