Yep, buy a center finder at WWW or make one like I did.
Alls it is is a simple jig. I took a square scrap of wood and cut it on a 45 degree diagonal cut with one edge of the saw blade precisely in the corner but do not cut all the way to the other corner. Now glue and nail 2 more scraps of wood to the 2 edges and you have your jig. I hold the dowel in the corner up against those 2 nailed on scraps and mark the dowel with a razor knife then rotate 90 degrees and mark again, now you have the center.

Another way Tattoo showed me is to make a jig that has a hole the size of the dowel and in the center of that hole drive a screw or sharp nail up from the bottom to protrude into the large hole just a little bit. All you do is take your dowel and ream it into the hole and you have a mark in the center and it is much quicker.
