Sad sad sight last night
I was driving one of the backroads over in lakeville twords massasoit state park in Taunton. This one particular stretch is about 1/2 mile woods on both sides..
Half way down, lay 3 bass on the side of the road.
2 were just over 28 inches
the 3rd was ~47" long and fat...
they were definitely caught that morning
It was kinda heartbreaking that someone would waste 3 fish like that.

I've seen them tossed in dumpsters , along the side of the road , parking lots , in the woods at campgrounds in Rhode Island and Montauk and simply left on the beach where caught. I've seen stringers abandoned by whoever caught them with the dead fish belly up and picked over by crabs.
people love the idea of catching a big fish and eating it. They hate the idea of cleaning and fileting the fish and dealing with the racks. Its a shame but it has happened a thousand times before and will continue as long as new people join the sport. I would hope people only ever do it once and learn from the experience that they should throw them back to swim again if they haven't got the stomach to clean the fish for food.

That's what that smell was. Why go to the trouble to keep those fish and then toss them in the woods? Pretty stupid.

Not just Lakeville.. every fisherman gets painted with the same brush.. be it dumping good fish like that.. littering/leaving fish line, old bait, lure and tackle packages behind.. tresspassing.. etc.
Any Negative actions, by a few.. reflect on all of us.
Sad.

Maybe we should offer a "How to clean a fish" in the FAQ section. I'll bet there are a few lurking here that either have never done it themselves or are too embarassed to ask how. We all had to learn at some point....

Should have thrown them in a garbage bag and buried them in the garden out of respect. At least thier passing would have served some purpose.

Great idea. I'm not the best filet guy and would love to learn some tricks from the pros.

catch and release
It is so much easier to let the fish go. The experience of a free fish splashing water in your face is so gratifying. I don't keep a fish unless I am planning to eat within a few days.

Any chance they were in a cooler that bounced out of the back of a truck? I've seen that happen more than once.

Or was it near a ramp?
I found a pair of whole 20's at a ramp in gansett once. I assumed forgotten and not abandoned, but thats b/c my mindset isnt to waste fish!

these were perfectly laid out all together on the side of the road.. there was a empty bag of ice there too that looked like they may have used to take the fish out.
