taking old rods down to blank

Is this possible to do and not damage the glass?

I wouldnt mind practicing on a few old rods i have kicking around.

just be careful when you are cutting the wraps/clear coat off. Take a razor blade and slide it right up the guide feet, it is actually pretty easy once you get the feel for it...

Used hard and put away dirty....

Start at the inside of the wraps - where the reel feet are and work outwards toward the beginning of the wraps. You may just get them started and then peel them off - pick them off with a fingernail.

Good luck - and don't let your wife get near your old glass blank, my wife launched a vacuum cleaner in my work area - future back bedroom last week pulling out some beach chairs. I picked the hoover upright off the blanks and noticed a rattle in one of them I recently stripped. Her little temper tantrum resulted in a split in the tip.
