It was not the best idea on their part, but if they had Korkers, and they were going with someone who was experienced, and it was not 3 days either side of a tropical system, then they did not fit the profile of 90% of the people who have died at the avenues.
They avenues are dangerous, but virtually all the accidents happen a few days before or after a tropical or extra-tropical system passes close enough to kick up the surf. Snip out those events, and the spots become fairly benign.
