Man Rescued Clinging To Lobster Buoy
Tourist Wanted Souvenir
POSTED: 6:17 am EDT July 31, 2007
CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- A vacationer from Colorado who reportedly wanted to bring home a lobster bouy as a souvenir didn't get what he wanted -- but he did get in trouble. Police in Charlestown said rescue boats were sent out Monday afternoon when a man later identified as Guy Connors, 44, was seen clinging to the lobster bouy about 150 yards off West Beach. Witnesses said the man had been in the waters for hours trying to get the bouy and may have been in some distress.
Police said Connors was intoxicated, and had said he had never been in the Atlantic Ocean before and wanted the bouy as a souvenir. He was charged with wantonly or recklessly causing a false response from authorities, which can bring up to a $500 fine or 30 days in jail.

Yeah, I figured the intoxicated part went without saying.
But I don't get the "causing a false response" charge Are the cops saying he really wasn't clinging to the buoy and wasn't in danger of either drowning or dying from hypothermia??
Unfortunately, I don't think "criminal stupidity" is on the books anywhere as a crime

Sounds like he had enough pot...
Interesting. I left that general vicinity about 1am and no one was around. I did see a guy fishing before sunset - well, he wasn't fishing but he was "backwinding" - wonder if that was the "Guy"

Should be charged with attempted theft and interfering with fishing gear. Why do people thin that anything in the water is theirs for the taking?
