It was the summer of 1965 in our vacation house at Brant Beach in Long Beach Island, NJ. My father bought me a 2 pc Garcia Conlon rod (many years later I turned the tip section into a gaff) paired with a Mitchell 302 reel and I was off! Barnegat light inlet, the open beaches of Harvey Cedars, Holgate... God those were the days of complete freedom. I knew nothing about stripers, I was after anything that swam and I was never dissapointed. My two best memories were of catching a large kingfish from the surf (somebody offered me two dollars for it! I was stunned!) and of watching a man battle and eventually land a very large black drum whose eye was as big as my hand. And me and my now departed father standing there facing the waves. To date all my troubles slide away where water meets land.
